Why white light split into seven colours when passed through a prism?

Speed of light in vacuum and in material substance is different. The speed of light in a material substance is different for different wavelengths. It depends on the refractive index of material substance.

When a ray of light passes through a glass prism, the ray of light will be deviated in a particular angle, which depends on the refractive index. This deviation increases with increasing refractive index and among the seven colors violet (380nm) deviates the most and red (600 nm) is deviated the least with other colors occupying intermediate positions. This is the reason why white light is split into seven colors.
